Band This Week: March 20-24, 2017
March 20-24 will conclude most of the sight-reading for the Spring Concert program and we will begin to work in earnest on some new pieces. I encourage everyone to support our Fine Arts Department by attending one of the performances of the spring musical, Sister Act. Shows are Thursday-Saturday at 7 p.m. or Sunday at 2 p.m.
Please take a moment to review the important announcements and detailed information below.
Band Announcements – March 20-24
Final Spring Trip Payments due
Many are already paid or have communicated with Mr. Stanley. If you are unsure of your financial standing for the spring trip, please check-in with Mr. Stanley ASAP.
Bright yellow trip permission forms are also due. Please see Mr. Stanley if you need another copy.
B3 Percussion Class – Playing test on Thursday
Vertical Waltz (4-mallet piece distributed on Tuesday)
Thursday, March 23 – Jazz Band Rehearsal – 3:30-5:00 p.m.
Please begin to look ahead in the calendar. Preparatory events for marching band 2017 are fast approaching.
Mr. Stanley will begin approaching students about scheduling and enrollment for next year. Please consider how you can continue being a part of our band. We have so much talent and potential that can help the growth of our other ensembles, including marching band.
Additionally, think of how you can help recruit middle school students so that we can keep growing! Last year’s band classes had approximately 62 total students with 14 seniors. This year, we have 70 members. That is a net growth of 22 people! We would love to double that number for 2017-2018.
FYI – Several recruitment and outreach efforts are planned as we near the end of the school year, including exciting opportunities for middle school collaboration!
Our band is participating in Sousa’s March Mania! We are devoting time each class block to learn, listen, analyze, and vote on different marches. The Marine Band’s contest is a great way to learn about the history of band music, listen to fabulous recordings, and discover new music! We encourage everyone to stay musically curious and check-out this great resource.
Private Lessons
Students wishing to take an additional step toward improving their musical skills might consider taking private lessons during the summer and/or school year.
Many RCPS staff members (including Mr. Stanley!) teach during the summer at reasonable rates.
Please contact Mr. Stanley for more information.
As information about lessons becomes available, we will post on the website and in weekly updates.
