ABOUT THE BAND

William Fleming High School Bands

Since its founding in 1933, William Fleming High School has developed a strong tradition of instrumental music.  Today’s band reflects many years of commitment from students, parents, administration, and teachers.  The program is comprised of five separate ensembles: Symphonic Band, Marching Colonels, Jazz Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble, and Basketball Pep Band.  Public performances in a variety of settings broaden our purpose from simply educational opportunity to community outreach.  This is clearly articulated in our student-developed mission statement:

The William Fleming High School Bands are ensembles where everyone contributes by committing to an attitude of excellence.  We are a family that is building a foundation for the future, working for goals greater than ourselves.  We strive for true dedication and passion in our performances, so that we achieve Colonel Pride and respect not for ourselves, but for our City.

Roanoke City Public Schools

The Roanoke City Public Schools are comprised of a diverse urban student population in Southwest Virginia.  The District’s diversity is a source of strength in the mission to “graduate students prepared for life in a rapidly changing world.”  This preparation is enhanced by the value placed on cultural opportunities.  Superintendent Dr. Rita D. Bishop and our school board have been unwavering voices of commitment and support for the cause of arts education.  Their efforts ensure instruments, instructors, and resources for all students, regardless of financial situations.  In partnership with the VH1 Save the Music Foundation, Roanoke City Public Schools are not only a model for urban education, but a clear example of the need for arts education in the curriculum.
